Morning

  • Start at the Visitor Center: Begin with a 15-minute film that provides an overview of George Washington's early life. The center also houses a museum with artifacts, an information desk, and a gift shop. 

  • Tour the Memorial House Museum: Explore this replica of a typical 18th-century Virginia plantation home, constructed in 1931. Furnished with period antiques, it offers insights into colonial life. 

  • Visit the Colonial Revival Garden: Adjacent to the Memorial House, this garden features herbs and flowers common to Washington's time, including thyme, sage, and hollyhocks. 


Midday

  • Explore the Colonial Living Farm: Experience a working farm with livestock and crops, demonstrating 18th-century farming methods. Costumed interpreters often showcase traditional crafts like candle and soap making. 

  • Enjoy a Picnic Lunch: Head to the designated picnic area, open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that alcohol and certain items like hammocks are prohibited. 


Afternoon

  • Stroll to the Washington Family Burial Ground: Visit the resting place of 32 family members, including George Washington's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The site features replicas of original gravestones and memorial tablets. 

  • Relax at the Potomac River Beach: Unwind by the water, take a leisurely walk, or enjoy birdwatching. The area is known for sightings of bald eagles and other native birds. 

  • Hike the Popes Creek Trail: This trail offers scenic views and insights into how Native Americans and the Washingtons adapted to the area around Popes Creek.
